Electrical Steel Sheets

NIPPON STEEL manufactures a wide range of electrical steel sheets in order to meet the demands of various applications. Based on our technologies that have been fostered through the research and manufacture for many years, we have worked hard in improving the product quality and developing new products and have delivered many achievements.
Our products, Grain-oriented electrical steel sheets, such as ORIENTCORE HI-B, ORIENTCORE HI-B LS, ORIENTCORE HI-B PM, as well as NON-ORIENTED ELECTRICAL STEEL SHEETS such as HIEXCORE, HIGH TENSILE STRENGTH HILITECORE, and various coatings, are highly regarded for their superb quality and abundant product line-up.

Iron with magnetic properties

Electrical steel sheets: high-performance materials that make use of the magnetic properties to the utmost degree

This technological development makes steel sheets easy to magnetize to reduce electric loss (iron loss), supporting the "energy saving society."

  • Grain-oriented electrical steel sheets contribute to making transformers smaller and higher in efficiency, which is essential for electric power distribution.
  • Non-oriented electrical steel sheets contribute to increasing efficiency and downsizing of various types of motors for vehicles such as EVs and HVs, home appliances including air conditioners, and industrial machines.

Iron loss

  • Energy consumed by magnetizing steel sheets, the smaller the better
  • Contributing to increasing efficiency of motors
  • A smaller sheet thickness makes the loss lower (↔ High magnetic flux density)

Magnetic flux density

  • The amount of magnetic flux per unit cross-sectional area when a steel sheet is magnetized, the larger the better
  • Contributing to increasing motor torques
  • The thicker the sheet is, the higher the magnetic flux becomes (↔ Low iron loss)

Strength

  • A large strength that helps withhold the high-speed rotation of a motor
  • Securing a strength contributes to reducing weights, even with a small thickness

EV and HV motor driving conditions and requirements for materials

According to the travel status, mortors require high revolution, high efficiency, and high output. The material properties required to achieve these are "high magnetic flux density," "high-frequency wave and low iron loss," and "high strength", but these contradict each other. For this reason, it has been difficult to satisfy all of these requirements.
