Activities of Various Works and Group Companies

Nippon Steel has steelworks in various parts of Japan and highly values its partnerships with local communities.
In addition to environmental preservation activities tailored to the characteristics of each region, we actively foster Coexistence with Communities.

Support to cultural and sport activities is another way we actively contribute to local communities.

Support in education

Our staff at each steelworks go to nearby elementary schools to provide on-site classes. The Kyushu works Oita area has been holding classes every year since 2007, but after an interruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic, classes resumed in fiscal 2023 for the first time in four years. This year, a total of 103 children from two elementary schools were given science experiments.

Social interaction at festivals

Each steelworks holds a steelworks festival jointly with the local community. Factory tours and many other events are held, and many people, including steelworks employees and their families, and local residents have a great time every year. We also actively participate in commuinities’ festivals.

Sports tournaments

In the Setouchi Works Hirohata Area, on November 5, 2023, the "Nippon Steel Midori-no-machi Sports Tournament 2023" was held in the vicinity of the Hirohata Baseball Stadium. about 1,200 people from the local community participated. (The event was sponsored by the Setouchi Works Hirohata Area, co-sponsored by the Association for Creating Green Town and the Nippon Steel Hirohata Labor Union.) Sports such as soft baseball, soft tennis, table tennis, kendo and volleyball were held and the participants competed, demonstrating the result of their training. Other steelworks also hold various sports tournaments.

Community cleanup activities

Beach cleanup activity

Various cleaning activities are carried out in the vicinity of each steelworks. At Isonoura Beach adjacent to the Kansai Works Wakayama Area, we conducted a clean-up activity on June 24, 2023. This was the first time in four years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a total of about 180 people—those involved in the steelworks and their families, as well as surfers who were present cleaned the beach before the start of the beach season.

Kashima Antlers FC

Unique hometown activities in collaboration with the local government

In 2007, we launched the Antlers Hometown Council, whose members are the five cities of Kashima Antlers Hometown (Kashima City, Itako City, Kasumi City, Namegata City and Hokota City) and Ibaraki Prefecture. In keeping with the mission of contributing to society in close cooperation with local communities through sports (J. League 100 Year Vision) and promoting local development, the council plays a central role in the current Hometown activities. For example, they offer Kids Pass, which allows all elementary school students in the Hometown region to watch the games for free, the Hometown elementary school visit program, where the players visit all the elementary schools in the region, and the dietary education caravan program, where similarly, the players visit elementary schools in the region to teach them about diet and exercise. In addition, the council is also engaged in promoting the collaboration between local specialties and sponsor companies, as well as other activities that contribute to local communities.
