Nippon Steel Corporation
Nippon Steel Corporation (Nippon Steel) has obtained EcoLeaf Environmental Product Declarations based on the Japan EPD Program operated by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization (SuMPO) for three types of high-alloy OCTG and line pipe products (*1). These are the first EPDs for stainless steel products manufactured in Japan.
Due to their excellent corrosion resistance, Nippon Steel's high-alloy OCTG and line pipes are widely used as products for drilling and transport, mainly in the harsh environments of oil and gas development sites. In recent years, customer needs have been increasing in the fields of decarbonization and renewable energy, such as CCS and geothermal power generation.
EcoLeaf is an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification program operated in Japan for disclosing quantitative environmental information in view of the entire life cycle of a product, from the mining of ores and manufacturing of steel products to waste disposal and recycling. In May 2021, Nippon Steel obtained EcoLeaf EPDs for OCTG and line pipes of carbon steel and low-alloy steel. With the additional EPDs for stainless steel pipes, we are now able to objectively assess the environmental impacts of all grades of OCTG and line pipes we produce. In addition, use of Nippon Steel's OCTG and line pipes will reduce CO2 emissions throughout the value chain, including through savings in labor during construction, lighter weight, and longer service lives, thereby enabling to strength the customer’s efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality.
Since Nippon Steel first published the EcoLeaf EPDs for H-beams in December 2019, we have published as many as 52 EPDs for various types of products so as to cover the majority of our steel products. As the movement toward carbon neutrality accelerates around the world, customers are asking for evaluations that include the materials used.
In addition to constantly pursuing the world's best technologies and manufacturing capabilities, Nippon Steel will continue to proactively disclose the environmental performance of its steel products, which are extremely recyclable and environmentally sustainable materials, while meeting the sustainability standards outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations.
