Nippon Steel Corporation ("Nippon Steel") has obtained EcoLeaf
Declaration(*1) certification under the Japan EPD Program, which is run by the Sustainable Management
Promotion Organization or SuMPO, for our Electrical Steel Sheets and Nickel Plated Steel Sheet (product
name: SUPERNICKELTM)(*2).
EcoLeaf Declaration is an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)(*1) certification program for disclosing
quantitative environmental information that covers the entire lifecycle of a product, from resource
extraction to manufacturing/assembly, distribution, use, disposal and recycling, by using the Life Cycle
Assessment (LCA) methodology. This program enables our customers to objectively assess the environmental
impact throughout the lifecycles of the Electrical Steel Sheets and Nickel Plated Steel Sheet.
The Electrical Steel Sheet is a type of steel that is used in the iron cores in motors
and generators of electric vehicles, air-conditioners and a variety of other electrical devices, and in
transformers used for power transmission and distribution. Amid growing demand and high performance
requirements for electric vehicle motors and the trend toward stricter regulations to improve efficiency
in transformers, we have earned high marks from domestic and international customers by proposing optimal
materials that balance conflicting needs at a high level and by promoting measures to improve the capacity
and quality. Furthermore, Nippon Steel's Electrical Steel Sheet is positioned as part of the
NSCarbolex™ Solution(*3) announced on November 1, 2022, and we are working to provide value to help
realize a carbon-neutral society by helping customers reduce CO2 emissions from use of our
products and helping save energy during power transmission and distribution. In addition, we are also
considering measures to further improve our capacity to meet growing demand and upgrade our products in
the future.
SUPERNICKELTM is a steel sheet product used in storage batteries (secondary batteries), which
are becoming increasingly important amid efforts to realize a decarbonized society, as well as in dry
cells (primary batteries), consumer products such as stationery, and automobiles. Featuring excellent
workability, strict inclusion control, high plating adhesion and extensive options for materials,
Nippon Steel's SUPERNICKELTM is designed to achieve a longer lifespan for customers' nickel
plated products, improve productivity and strengthen the products, thereby helping reduce CO2
emissions and environmental impact.
Electrical Steel Sheets and Nickel Plated Steel Sheet are essential products for electric vehicle motors
and storage batteries (secondary batteries), which are key components for the electrification of
automobiles. Nippon Steel is the world's only integrated steel manufacturer that produces both Electrical
Steel Sheets and Nickel Plated Steel Sheet, and is helping realize a carbon-neutral society by providing
optimal materials amid rapid transitions for decarbonization.
Since December 2019, when Nippon Steel first obtained the EcoLeaf Declaration certification for H-shapes,
we have so far obtained 41 EcoLeaf Declaration certifications for a wide range of items and products,
covering most of our steel products. In our latest achievement, Nippon Steel has become the first company
in Japan to obtain EcoLeaf Declaration certification for Electrical Steel Sheets and Nickel Plated Steel
Sheet. As initiatives for carbon neutrality accelerate worldwide, customers are evaluating companies based
not only on conventional criteria, but also on the materials they use in an increasing number of business
sectors.
Nippon Steel will pursue world-leading technologies and manufacturing capabilities while actively
disclosing the environmental performance of our steel products, which are highly recyclable,
environmentally friendly, sustainable and in compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
adopted by the United Nations.

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). EPDs provide quantitative environmental information on the

use and disposal/recycling. The EcoLeaf Declaration is operated and administered by the Sustainable
Management Promotion Organization.
