U. S. Steel Board Approves Nearly $3 Billion Investment for New Hot Strip Mill at Mon Valley Works

Contributing to Edgar Thomson Plant’s Enhanced Competitiveness and Regional Economic Development

Nippon Steel Corporation

United States Steel Corporation (“U. S. Steel”), a wholly owned subsidiary of Nippon Steel Corporation (“Nippon Steel”), has decided to construct a new hot strip mill at the company’s Edgar Thomson Plant, part of its Mon Valley Works in western Pennsylvania. This investment represents one of the concrete steps toward Nippon Steel’s committed $11.0 billion investment plan across the U. S. Steel footprint, with total capital expenditures for the hot strip mill project at Mon Valley Works amounting to approximately $3.0 billion.

The investment will replace aging equipment with modern steelmaking technology, increasing annual production capacity from approximately 2.2 million tons to approximately 3.5 million tons. This will enable the establishment of a product supply system capable of meeting a wide range of demand, including in the automotive, home appliance, and energy sectors. In addition, the introduction of equipment—such as new walking beam furnaces and an in-line slab sizing press—will achieve higher productivity, energy savings, yield improvements, and enhanced quality stability, thereby contributing to the stable supply of high-quality steel products to our customers. Construction will begin after necessary permits are received, with initial production expected in late 2029.

Nippon Steel positions U. S. Steel as a core hub in its North American strategy. Through this investment, Nippon Steel aims to strengthen its competitiveness while contributing to the sustainable development of the U.S. steel industry and local communities by providing high-quality products and services to customers, and by maintaining and creating local employment opportunities.
