Execution of Definitive Agreement to Newly Build an Electric Arc Furnace at AM/NS Calvert

Dec. 22, 2020

Nippon Steel Corporation

On December 22, Nippon Steel Corporation (“NSC”) and ArcelorMittal S.A.(Head Office: Luxembourg, “AM”) executed a definitive agreement to newly build an electric arc furnace (“EAF”) at AM/NS Calvert, LLC (Partnership Interest: NSC50%, AM50%, Head Office: United States, “Calvert”), a joint venture between NSC and AM.
The EAF is scheduled to start its operation in the first half of 2023. Calvert currently produces steel sheet products by processing semi-finished products (slabs) procured from domestic and overseas suppliers.  With the newly-built EAF, Calvert will be able to manufacture by itself part of slabs necessary to produce its steel sheet products and will strive for further strengthening its competitiveness through advantages of the self-manufacture, such as shortening lead time in slab procurement, improving its productivity through utilization of self-manufactured high temperature slabs, and increasing the domestic procurement ratio of slabs. In addition, the EAF will produce slabs for automotive flat products, including Gen3 advanced high-tensile steel sheets (980Mpa and above).
NSC intends to concentrate its resources on Calvert, which has one of the most distinguished equipment capabilities in the United States, and to further strengthen its supply capability of full range of products including the state-of –the –art steel products in the North America.

Outline of EAF

  • Capacity:1.5 million metric tons/year
  • Investment amount:applox.US$775M
  • Start operation(plan):first half of 2023

Outline of AM/NS Calvert

  • Location: Calvert, Alabama, United States
  • Business: Manufacture and sale of hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and coated steel sheets
  • Partnership Interest: NSC 50%, AM 50%
