NSSMC’s Titanium Alloy is Adopted for Sports Car Mufflers

Titanium alloy “Super-TIXTM10CU” made by Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) has been adopted for the exhaust system of Nissan Motor ’s new GT-R sports car.

The “Super-TIXTM10CU” is a titanium alloy made by adding 1.0% of copper to titanium. By lowering the content ratio of oxygen to a level equivalent to that of pure titanium and adding copper, NSSMC has realized a room-temperature workability equivalent to that of pure titanium as well as superior high-temperature strength.

Due to these features, the resultant enhanced workability and heat resistance as good as needed for exhaust parts were highly evaluated by Nissan and  adopted for use for genuine parts. Also, the shift to titanium has enabled Nissan to reduce the weight of the muffler compared to those made of stainless steel.

Titanium is lightweight, strong, and highly corrosion resistant. On top of these various features, the titanium exhaust system’s pleasant engine sound is an attractive added-value.

Leveraging its wide range of product line-up, including unique alloys, and its R&D capacity and responsiveness to delivery requirements as evidenced by the NSSMC’s long track record in steelmaking, NSSMC will continue working to expand adoption of titanium products as a part of the solutions it offers to enhance value of motorbikes and four-wheel vehicles.
