NSSMC Receives the Highest Environmental Rating
from Development Bank of Japan

Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) has received the highest raiting on "DBJ Environmentally Rated Loan Program" of Development Bank of Japan Inc. (DBJ).

DBJ Environmentally Rated Loan Program evaluates the degree of environmentally-responsible management in a corporation, based on its own screening system. It is the first ever financing program in the world to implement such a specialized method of environmental rating.

Under the principle of “Ecological Management,” NSSMC is committed to contributing to the creation of an environmental-preservation oriented society through lowering of environmental impact. For this purpose, the company is addressing various environmental challenges, from those of local communities to global issues. This is being done through “NSSMC’s Three Eco-Friendly Initiatives” (eco process, eco products, and eco solution) and the development of innovative technologies. The challenges include the maintenance and improvement of good living environments, the promotion of reduction and recycling of waste, the issues of global warming, and the maintenance and improvement of biological diversity. NSSMC’s efforts have been recognized and earned the highest rating for “particularly innovative environmental efforts”, thereby receiving the said environmental ratings-based financing from DBJ.

NSSMC received particularly high scores for the following three areas:

(1)Under the Environmental Management Committee headed by a vice president, NSSMC is
performing an effective unique environmental system through regular on-site supervision of
companies selected out of the many Group companies in Japan and overseas, based on
  their environmental magnitude.

(2)NSSMC is contributing to building a recycle-oriented society by continuing a high-level use
of by-product gas and exhaust heat, generated from its manufacturing processes, as well
as by reusing waste plastics and discarded tires that are generated from households and
  industries other than steelmaking.

(3)Through provision of high-tensile steel materials and other eco-friendly products (eco
products), NSSMC is contributing to reduce environmental impacts at every stage of the
life cycle of its products, and is focusing on technological development, which can be
represented by the next-generation steelmaking process development.
