NSSMC Named a Thomson Reuters Top 100 Global Innovator in 2014
for Third Consecutive Year

Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) was recognized as among the world’s top 100 most innovative corporations, by receiving a “Thomson Reuters 2014 Top 100 Global Innovator Award" for the third consecutive year. It was presented with a trophy today.

This award, now in its fourth year, gives recognition to those companies which have carried out innovative R&D activities and outstanding intellectual property activities, their selection being based on strictly objective data extracted from Thomson Reuters’ own data base and according to its own standards.

For this award, the four basic criteria of evaluation are: patent volume, global reach, success rate, and patent influence indicated by citations.

In selecting NSSMC, Thomson Reuters commented the following:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of the four basic criteria, NSSMC was given particularly high rating in the categories of “success rate” and “global reach.” Particularly, NSSMC has greatly progressed in raising “success rate,” suggesting NSSMC’s intellectual property activities are based on its high level of strategy and global reach.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of the world’s top 100 innovators named for 2014, 39 are Japanese companies, a significant increase from 28 in 2013. Among them, NSSMC is the only steel company given an award for a third consecutive year. We feel honored that our many years of R&D activities and intellectual property creation have won us recognition as one of the world’s most innovative companies.

We aim at contributing to the progress of the society through provision of excellent products and services. We are committed to carry on R&D activities, protect and utilize the resultant intellectual property, and thus support our global business development.
