Power Failure at Nagoya Works

Jun. 23, 2014

Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation

At around 2:50 p.m., Sunday, June 22, 2014, a power failure occurred in Nagoya Works of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (“NSSMC”). In order to deal with the power failure, coke oven gas was burnt off and a substantial amount of smoke was released.

Following the smoke generation and release caused by power failure in January 2014, we deeply regret any inconvenience that may have been experienced by neighborhood residents and other related parties.

No injuries have been reported from this incident. Coke oven gas which produced smoke has been burnt off and released to the air safely. This combustion was ended at around 3:30 a.m., Monday, June 23.

By around 11:00 p.m., Sunday, June 22, power supply to the manufacturing facilities resumed and individual units of equipment and facilities are now being inspected and started up, one by one. The present status and outlook to resume operation of equipment and facilities are as follows:

  • Coke oven (some of coke ovens) resumed operation on the morning of June 23.
  • Blast furnace (one) is scheduled to resume operation in the early hours of June 24.
  • Other major equipment and facilities are scheduled to resume operation within the next few days.

We intend to take measures to ensure that the product supply to our customers would not be affected.

NSSMC will investigate the cause of this incident and make utmost efforts to prevent the recurrence of this situation, which includes working on the measures NSSMC has already begun to take.
