Power Failure at Nagoya Works
Jan. 17, 2014
Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation
At around 11:50 a.m., Friday, January 17, 2014, a power failure occurred in Nagoya Works of Nippon Steel
& Sumitomo Metal Corporation (“NSSMC”) due to a failure in the substation facility of its power
plant. In order to deal with the power failure, coke oven gas was burnt off and a substantial amount of
smoke was released. We deeply regret any inconvenience that may have been experienced by neighborhood
residents and other related parties.
No injuries have been reported from this
incident. Coke oven gas which produced smoke has been burnt off and released to the air safely. We are now
investigating possible effects to the manufacturing facilities of Nagoya Works. The material damage to those
facilities is limited at this point. We intend to take measures to ensure that the product supply to our
customers would not be affected.
NSSMC will investigate the cause of this incident
and take measures in an attempt to prevent the recurrence of this situation.
