NSSMC Receives 2013 Thomson Reuters Top 100 Global Innovator Award

Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (“NSSMC,” Chairman & CEO: Shoji Muneoka) received a “Thomson Reuters 2013 Top 100 Global Innovator Award," which honors the world’s top 100 most innovative corporations and institutions, and was presented with a trophy today.

This award, now in its third year, gives recognition to those companies which have carried out innovative R&D activities and outstanding intellectual property activities, their selection being based on strictly objective data extracted from Thomson Reuters’s own data base and according to its own standards.

For this award, the four basic criteria of evaluation are: patent volume, global reach, success rate, and patent influence indicated by citations.

In selecting NSSMC, Thomson Reuters commented to the following:
…………………
Of the four basic criteria, NSSMC was given particularly high rating in the categories of “patent volume” and “global reach.” Also rated high in “success rate” and “patent influence indicated by citations,” NSSMC seems well balanced in the four criteria, indicating high levels and wide spread use of NSSMC’s technology.
…………………
Of the world top 100 innovators cited for 2013, 28 Japanese companies were represented (25 last year), and NSSMC is the only one selected from the metal refining industry, including steel, as last year. This is viewed by us as an indication of the recognition of NSSMC, backed up with many years of R&D activities and intellectual property activities of both the former Nippon Steel and the former Sumitomo Metals, integrated in 2012, as one of the world’s most innovative companies.

We aim at contributing to society through provision of excellent products and services and further pursuit of technological achievements and refining of manufacturing strengths. In future, we shall resolutely carry on R&D activities, protect and utilize intellectual property born of them, thus supporting our global business development.
