Regarding Media Reports on August 18

There were reports in the media on August 18 that Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (“NSSMC”) intended to comply if the Supreme Court of Korea upholds a ruling by the High Court of Korea ordering NSSMC to pay in the litigation concerning forced labor during the war.

NSSMC considers that the ruling by the Seoul High Court is unjustifiable in that it denies the Agreement on the Settlement of Problems Concerning Property and Claims and on Economic Cooperation Between Japan and the Republic of Korea (1965) which settled completely and finally the problems including forced labor, a formal agreement between the two nations. NSSMC appealed to the Supreme Court of Korea on July 30.

NSSMC will clarify the legitimacy of its position in the proceedings of the Supreme Court of Korea.
