Licensing of Technology Related to Hands-on Safety Education to China Steel Corporation

Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. (Sumitomo Metals) has licensed technology related to hands-on safety education to China Steel Corporation (CSC). It has been developed at the Kashima Steel Works and the Wakayama Steel Works.

Today, a hands-on safety education facility was completed at Kaohsiung, Taiwan and an opening ceremony was held.

1.Hands-on Safety Education Facility
The hands-on safety education facility was developed by Sumitomo Metals and Sumikin Management Co., Ltd. Sumitomo Metals established the first facility at the Kashima Steel Works in 1997. The Company inaugurated education for its employees and has expanded the scope of education to employees of affiliated companies since then. Today, Sumitomo Metals is accepting participants from a wide range of industries, including not only the steel industry but also the automobile and energy industries. In 2008, the cumulative number of participants exceeded 120,000, and the recognition of this education as an effective program is expanding. Sumitomo Metals is also conducting mobile education using vehicles with hands-on equipment throughout Japan on request.

2.Technology Licensing
Sumitomo Metals licensed technology to CSC. Specifically the drawing of facilities and educational manuals were provided and five instructors received training.

At the hands-on safety education facility constructed at CSC, equipment has been installed to enable to understand the hazards such as fall from heights, entrapment by rotating machinery, injuries during crane hoisting operation and electric shocks. CSC employees will take safety training courses according to the hands-on safety education program.

Sumitomo Metals will continue to expand its programs and support the fostering of instructors.
