Nippon Steel Corporation (location: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Shoji Muneoka, “NSC”) and Nippon Steel Trading Co., Ltd. (location: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Tetsuo Imakubo, “NST”) have reached an agreement whereby NSC will acquire a 23.3% economic interest in the Revuboe Project, of which NST currently holds a 33.3% interest. A bankable feasibility study will be conducted with a view to launching a full-scale development of the project.

The Revuboe Project is a green field coking coal project in the Tete province in the Republic of Mozambique. NST, together with other parties, was granted an exclusive prospecting license in 2004. Since then NST, jointly with the Australian resources company Talbot group, has conducted exploration activities and confirmed the existence of a large resource of high quality hard coking coal that is mineable by open-cut mining.

The Republic of Mozambique, located on the southeast coast of Africa, has become a politically stable democracy after its civil war, which ended in 1992. In 2004, the Government of Mozambique commenced restoration work on the Sena railway line in order to connect the coal fields of the Tete province with the port of Beira. At the same time, it started granting prospecting licenses for various mineral resources. NST, looking for resource opportunities in the African region, responded to such government initiative by obtaining a prospecting license over the Revuboe deposit. Mozambique is now attracting attention as one of the last few large undeveloped source of high quality hard coking coal in the world, with many ongoing coal mine development projects in the area.

With the participation of NSC in the Revuboe Project, NSC and NST will jointly accelerate the development of the Revuboe mine, aiming to strengthen the metallurgical coal procurement base. The Korean steel company POSCO has a 7.8% interest in the project. Working together with POSCO in the development of the Revuboe mine will also enhance the strategic alliance with POSCO, and will further strengthen Nippon Steel group’s business base as a global player.
