Receipt of Order for 2 units of Coke Dry Quenching Equipment (CDQ) from POSCO

2003/05/20

In collaboration with POSCO Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. (commonly known as POSCO E & C; Chairman: Deuk-Pyo Park) of South Korea, Nippon Steel Corporation (Representative Director and President: Akio Mimura) and Nissho Iwai Corporation (President and CEO: Hidetoshi Nishimura) have received an order for 2 units of Coke Dry Quenching equipment (CDQ) from POSCO (formerly known as Pohang Steel & Iron Co., Ltd.) of South Korea.(These plants are going to be newly constructed for Gwangyang Works third and fourth coke ovens respectively.)

In recent years, POSCO has been approaching to the environmental protection/management of the iron works and their surrounding areas. The construction of the CDQ equipment is part of such movement. So far, Nippon steel had already constructed 3 units of CDQ equipment for POSCO.Two of them are in operation at POSCO’s Gwangyang Works and the other at their Pohang Works. Their performance is highly appreciated. That leads to the latest order receipt.

CDQ equipment is one of the main products of the Nippon Steel Plant & Machinery Division. Recently, the company received consecutive orders to build a new CDQ unit for Wuhan Iron and Steel Company and a No.2 CDQ unit for Shougang Iron and Steel Corporation. In addition, Nippon Steel had experiences in Brazil and Taiwan to modify old similar equipments which were constructed by the other companies. Our CDQ unit is equipped with a charging device which enables to improve the particle size distribution of coke to be charged into chamber, a sub-economizer playing an important role in the efficient heat exchange, etc. With those technologies, it has a high cooling capacity, which enables efficient heat recovery with less cooling gas. Furthermore, our continuous discharge device contributes to compactness and ease of maintenance operations.

Including the latest order, Nippon steel will have built 43 units of CDQ equipment all over the world, 37 new and 6 modified plants. In the past 5-years, we have supplied 9 new units and 6 modified plants. These plants keep high operating rates. That is why we enjoy customers’ confidence as a top supplier of CDQ.

Today, it’s globally said that steel works should take countermeasures in environmental protection. It’s considered that CDQ equipment meet such market needs. Nippon Steel and Nissho Iwai will continue to focus on extending the advanced technologies, including CDQ, which contribute to environmental protection, such as CO2 reduction, and energy saving.

CDQ is the equipment which quenches red-hot coke by means of circulating inert gas in a quenching chamber. (Red-hot coke is dry distilled in a coke oven.) The introduction of CDQ equipment brings excellent benefits, as follows.
The working environment around CDQ equipment is improved, because CDQ equipment prevents dust from spreading into atmosphere by enclosing all the process. The sensible heat of the red-hot coke is recovered and heat-exchanged into steam by a boiler. The steam produced without additional energy is used for the generation of electric power. The moderate cooling rate of the red-hot coke in the CDQ equipment improves coke quality and stabilizes blast furnace operation.
