Tile Roofs Made of NSSMC’s Titanium Sheets are Adopted at a New Kojima
Nursery School Building

Roof tiles formed of titanium steel sheets made by Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) have been adopted for the Kojima Nursery School (run by a social welfare corporation, the Kojima Welfare Association, in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture). Construction of the nursery school, that has 2,258m2 of  building area, was completed on August 31, 2016. NSSMC supplied titanium steel sheets, M-ARCHI, Co., Ltd. designed the tiles made of this material, Kojima Industries Corporation manufactured the titanium tiles, using their press technology, and Gantan Beauty Industry Co., Ltd. constructed the roofs made of this tile.

Kojima Nursery School, founded in 1971, has a 45-year history as a community-based nursery notable for its children having frequent interaction with local senior citizens.

When it became time to reconstruct this facility, a people-friendly wooden nursery building was designed according to the concept of an “environmentally-friendly and children-friendly facility.” There is a central courtyard, 30 meters square, and the building has used Japanese cedar from the forest owned by Kojima Industries Corporation in Mie Prefecture and the cedar lumber from the Toyota City Forestry Cooperative. For the roof material of this building, NSSMC’s titanium was adopted because compared to alternatives it has less maintenance requirement, is lightweight, is highly safe, and is highly corrosion resistant. Also it does not elute metal ions.

NSSMC’s titanium building materials are lightweight (their specific gravity is 60% that of steel and 50% that of copper) and contribute to safety and security (including the contribution made through enhanced efficiency and shorter labor time for multi-level building construction work, mitigation of loads on framework structures through seismic resistance enhancement, and improvement of environmental friendliness). In addition, NSSMC has realized life cycle cost (LCC) improvements (reduction of the maintenance burden) through advances in design and the superior discoloration resistance of titanium materials. NSSMC is looking forward to further promoting the diffusion of titanium products in Japan and overseas.
