Resumption of Operation of Nagoya Works DAPS Facility

Dec. 19, 2015

Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation

We once again express our deep regret for the great trouble and inconvenience caused to the local residents and those concerned by the Nagoya Works coke fire accident that occurred on September 3, 2014.

Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) has completed measures to prevent recurrence of accidents, and the Nagoya Works No. 1 coke oven resumed operation on October 19, 2015. The DAPS Facility* had also been shut down but resumed operation today (December 19) after all the measures needed have been completed. This also means that all the facilities which ceased operation after the occurrence of the accident have resumed operation.

NSSMC have deeply reflected on the series of accidents, and will continue making measures to prevent recurrence of accidents while hoping to restore the confidence of the local residents, customers, and those concerned.

* “DAPS” stands for Dry-cleaned and Agglomerated Precompaction system. The DAPS Facility is to dry, separate, and briquette the fine coal (raw material of coke) into agglomerate.
