NSSMC to Exhibit at Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai

Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) and its group companies (Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd.; Nippon Steel & Sumikin Metal Products Co., Ltd.; and Nippon Steel & Sumikin Coated Sheet Corporation) will exhibit under the theme of reconstruction and disaster risk prevention at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, which will be held at the Sendai International Center from March 14 to 18.

The Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction is a conference sponsored by the United Nations to discuss international strategy on disaster reduction, and both the first and second conferences were held in Japan. The third conference will be held in Sendai City, which is in the area struck by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011, and in addition to communicating the reconstruction of the disaster-afflicted region to the world, it will be an important opportunity to share Japan’s experience and knowledge regarding disaster reduction with the global community and make an international contribution.

As part of the public forum at this conference, the “Disaster Risk Reduction Exhibition of the World” will take place, and the NSSMC Group will also exhibit technology and construction methods that are contributing to the recovery and reconstruction of the Tohoku region.

[Overview of NSSMC’s exhibits]
Based on the theme of “the Disaster Prevention and Disaster Risk Reduction-related Technologies of Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Group Companies (through initiatives aimed at recovery and reconstruction,” this exhibition will introduce the technologies of various Group companies associated with earthquake countermeasure-related technologies, tsunami countermeasure-related technologies, landslide disaster technologies in coexistence with nature, and technologies that contribute to recovery and reconstruction. Actual models will be exhibited on a daily basis at booths, including an exhibit regarding technology to reduce the weight of buildings using titanium roof tiles, a tower for evacuation when a tsunami occurs, and a wall structure to mitigate building damage. These exhibits will give visitors a deeper understanding of NSSMC Group technologies involving disaster risk reduction and disaster prevention.
