Survey Results on Radiation

We detected radiation from some of the materials used to place steel products in their prescribed position on the premises of our Kashima Works (Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture) on April 4 (Friday) of this year. In response to this, we conducted a company-wide survey on all materials of the same type. The results (overview) of this survey are as follows below. Furthermore, these results have been reported to the Nuclear Regulation Authority and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

1. Materials for which radiation was detected
Sheets of rubber used to place steel products (coils)

2. Plants where radiation was detected and the level of radiation detected
 Plant Name
 Amount of
Radiation Detected
 Range of Radiation Detected (μSv/h)
 Sheet Surface 1m Position
 Kashima Works
(Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture)
 33 3-5 0.6-0.7
 Yawata Works
(Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture)
 125 3-12 0.2-1.9

3. Measures taken on the materials for which radiation was detected
Entry by those other than authorized personnel has been prohibited and these materials are being managed safely.

4. Impact of radiation
(1) Impact on all residents in the vicinity of the steel works
We have confirmed the radiation dose of the site 4-5 m away from the materials for which radiation was detected is at the normal living standards level, so we believe there is no impact on the health of residents in the vicinity of the steel works.

(2) Impact on our steel products
We have confirmed that radiation has not been detected from the steel products in contact with the materials for which radiation was detected, so we believe there is no impact on our steel products.

(3) Impact on the workers on the premises of the steel works
We have confirmed that the radiation dose of the site 4-5 m away from the materials for which radiation was detected is at the normal living standards level, and the place where the radiation was detected (coil storage) is not a place where workers constantly remain, so we believe there is no impact on the health of the workers on the premises of the steel works at the present point in time.

5. Response
We will strive to take an appropriate response based on the guidance of the relevant organizations.
