As you may guess from the nomination of the expression “solo camping” for the most popular buzzword of 2020, camping has been trending for the past few years. During weekends and holidays, many families and young people visit camping grounds. Urban glamping*, an outdoor activity where people enjoy a night time urban landscape, is becoming popular as a chic recreational activity for adults. Moreover, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, more people are enjoying “home camping,” where they enjoy make-believe camping at home, instead of going out. Makio Yoshino, General Manager in charge of development, manufacturing and sales of outdoor activity products at Snow Peak Inc., comments on these social circumstances.
“In the modern society, our lives are becoming ever more convenient thanks to the advancement of civilization. As a downside, however, we are losing our humanness due to excessive stress, etc. Snow Peak believes that exposing yourself to nature by camping is the most effective way of recovering your humanness.
Moreover, even urban residents can recover their humanness by incorporating nature around them in their everyday lives. This is what we call ‘natural recreation.’ Our mission is to propose and realize opportunities for people to connect with nature and other people, by nurturing their abilities to live in nature, encouraging them to communicate with their families and friends, etc. Therefore, we focus on product planning and development capabilities and relation activities for connecting with users.”
The origin of their product development can be traced back to their unique mountain climbing gear, which was developed using artisanship of Tsubame-sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, for their founder’s personal use. Since then, as a manufacturer, they have been committed to designing items they personally would like to get. For example, they paid attention, before other companies, to the titanium properties of being light, durable and free of metal smell as well as its excellent temperature and low-temperature preservation performance and high corrosion resistance, which led them to develop their titanium mug. The lean and simple form and the comfortable-to-grip handle for easy storage that they had designed was embodied by the metal processing artisanship of Tsubame-sanjo. For the titanium material, they selected Nippon Steel’s TranTixxii. On a morning on a camping ground, boil water and sip coffee from a mug surrounded by the brisk air. Their titanium mug has become indispensable company for such a blissful time. Loved by campers around the world, this mug has become their flagship product.
